Spring Into Design: Biophilic Design

By AJ Finn: As spring moves into summer I find myself drawn more and more outside during all times of the day; a morning walk, lunch outside, an evening bike ride. While on these neighborhood ventures I have enjoyed finding historical biophilic design elements all around me.

Biophilic design is a concept that seeks to connect our intrinsic need to associate with nature in the modern built environment. Direct experiences of nature include but are not limited to light, air, water, fire, plants, and weather. Indirect experiences of nature can include images of nature, natural materials, natural colors, and natural geometries.

Here are some examples of indirect biophilic design expressed through limestone doorway design and details.
